Happy July 4th to all my American friends.
I am celebrating it by saying the date in a silly wrong-way-around way.

Here, I pay testement to some American art- recreated most cleverly by Todd and Suzy.

And finally, never one to be afraid of a cliché, here is a sexy cowboy man.
What do you eat on July 4th? (Look! I even dropped the “the” for you.)
Please tell me. Could someone … talk burger to me?
Forgive me if you have roast beef and rissotto or something.
I do not know the ways of your people.
What is under the serving platter, O American ones?

Hi Poppy…
There is lots on the menu for my family. Hamburgers, hot dogs, fresh corn on the cob, fresh green beans, deviled eggs, blueberry cobbler, homemade ice cream, watermelon and an assortment of salads. My family celebrates "potluck" style…each family usually brings a favorite food..enough to share with all the others. We usually have around fifty people there.
Hi Poppy, for us it's fireworks at the beach and a picnic hamper filled with sandwiches, potato salad, deviled eggs, lemonade and brownies. We meet our friends there and stay for hours, listening to the bands play and watching the fireworks display over the water. We all wear red, white and blue, and lay on our backs in the sand as the evening gets late. My husband and I are always the last to leave the beach, long after the rest of the cars have gone.
Hello!
I have been shopping, buying pretty things for my trip to America.
I am glad to make you smile, Maria.
Anonymous, your day sounds lovely. I have never heard of blueberry cobbler and I rather think I need some. Thank you for taking a moment to tell me about it.
Scarlet, how wonderful to spend the day on the beach. Fireworks are one of my most favourite things. It sounds fun, relaxed and then romantic. Thanks for fitting me in and I hope your day is perfect.
My Sir has made spareribs in the crock-pot and will be crisping them in the oven. IF we had a grill he would have cooked them there. We are also having baked(jacket)potatoes and cream corn. Wanted corn on the cob but money is quite tight right now,so creamed corn it is!
The blueberry cobbler does sound a treat and I might need to walk to the store this evening and see if they have any in the bakery. I'll certainly find some when Poppy comes to visit. She is fond of blueberries, or bluebrees as she calls them.
Great version of American Gothic! I always wondered about that look on her face. Now I know what it's all about.
Growing up our 4th of July celebrations always included baked beans, german mustard potato salad, bratwurst, and corn on the cob. And if the fish were biting, pan fried walleye, sunfish, northern pike, and bullheads. As the sun went down we all got sparklers to light.
Scunge, spare ribs sounds scrummy, I love meat cooked like that- long and slow so it melts in your mouth. I am sorry I did not reply last night, someone had packed me off to bed.
Dev, I do not call them "bluebrees." Do I? You may give me a lesson on how to say it while I eat some. Yummy.
Season, I love that American Gothic picture- like you say, it all makes sense now.
Your 4th of July celebrations sound a bit magical. May I come one year please?
You do call them that, Poppy, as do many if not most speakers with your accent. Anyhow I think it's adorable and no corrective lesson is required – not for that in any case.
Season, I thought German potato salad was the one you never put mustard in. Perhaps I knew Minnesotans of much different background. And did you really eat bullheads? Wow!
You are correct that there is a version of German potato salad that does not have mustard and of all things, it is usually served warm. Yuck. But there is also the cold kind with mustard that came from my German grandma.
Bullheads taste great! There used to be a restaurant that was famous for them – Ike's Chicken Shack I think it was called. Wonder if it is still there?
FYI – I found a version of American Gothic that I think immediately precedes the version you have posted here:

tee hee hee
I found an Ike's Chicken Shack in Browns Valley, MN, but looks like it's closed. That's WAY the heck west of the Cities, almost to South Dakota. As far as eating bullheads, maybe I just hung out with fishing snobs when I lived in Minnesota.
That's the place! Too bad it's closed – that place was a hoot and a half.
Very cool post… and glad you liked our photoshoped version of American Gothic. It's the most parodied painting in history.

I have on my email that Todd and Suzy wrote a comment here but it has gone away and I have no idea how or why.
I am glad you enjoyed the post and I did not realise you two created the paddle version of American Gothic. Thank you so much for doing that and please check out Dev's site. (I have given you your rightful credit on both posts!)
